# How to use a CloneKit kit in Claude, ChatGPT or Codex

> Connect CloneKit to Claude, ChatGPT or Codex once, then ask your AI for any kit by name. Includes the setup commands and what needs an account.

Updated 2026-10-19. Page: https://clonekit.ai/guides/use-a-kit-in-claude-chatgpt-codex

You add CloneKit to your AI app once, as an MCP server. Every kit then comes through that one connection, so you never install kits one by one.

The link is the same for every app:

```
https://clonekit.ai/mcp
```

The first time your AI uses it, CloneKit asks you to sign in. Tap **Allow**.

## Claude

1. Open **Settings → Connectors**.
2. Choose **Add custom connector** and paste the link.
3. Sign in to CloneKit when Claude asks.

If you use Claude Code, run this in your terminal and then start Claude Code:

```sh
claude mcp add --transport http clonekit https://clonekit.ai/mcp
```

If Claude Code does not ask you to sign in, type `/mcp`.

## ChatGPT

1. Open **Settings → Apps & Connectors → Advanced** and turn on Developer mode.
2. Create a connector with the link.
3. Sign in to CloneKit when ChatGPT asks.

## Grok

1. Open **Connectors** and choose **New Connector → Custom**.
2. Paste the link and sign in to CloneKit. Tap **Allow**.

## Codex

Run this in your terminal, then start Codex:

```sh
codex mcp add clonekit --url https://clonekit.ai/mcp
```

## Cursor

On a kit page, choose **Add to Cursor**. Cursor opens and asks to install CloneKit. Sign in when Cursor asks.

## VS Code

On a kit page, choose **Add to VS Code**. VS Code opens and asks to install CloneKit. Sign in when it asks.

## Other AI apps

This command asks which apps you use (Windsurf, Gemini CLI, Zed, Goose and more) and adds CloneKit to them:

```sh
npx add-mcp https://clonekit.ai/mcp --name clonekit
```

`npx clonekit-cli setup` does the same from the CloneKit CLI. It needs Node.js 18 or later.

If your app has no sign-in step, make an API key in [Dashboard → Connections](/dashboard/connections) and send it as `Authorization: Bearer ck_…`.

## Ask for a kit

Open a new chat and say what you want done:

> Find a CloneKit kit that helps me write a project brief.

If you know the kit, give its id, like [`@francisco/whatsapp-agents`](/@francisco/whatsapp-agents). You can also [browse every kit](/kits); each kit page shows its id.

What your AI does next depends on the kit:

- A read kit is files. Your AI reads them and works from them.
- A run kit is steps. Your AI follows them with your tools and accounts, then checks the work against the expert's checks.

Paid kits are one-time purchases at the creator's price. See [pricing](/pricing) for what is free.

If you are choosing between a custom GPT and a Claude skill, read [custom GPT vs a Claude skill](/vs/custom-gpt-vs-claude-skills).

## Get a free kit as a skill

Any free read kit downloads as a SKILL.md folder:

```sh
npx clonekit-cli export @creator/kit-name
```

Copy the folder to `~/.claude/skills/` or your agent's skills folder.

Setup for every app is also in the [docs](/docs#connect). Stuck? Write to us from [support](/support).

## FAQ

### Do I install each kit separately?

No. You connect CloneKit once, and every kit comes through that connection. Your AI always gets the latest version of a kit.

### Do I need a CloneKit account?

Not to search. Anyone can search kits and read free kits. Running, buying and publishing need an account. The read-only server at https://clonekit.ai/mcp/read needs no sign-in.

### Can I use a kit as a Claude skill?

Free read kits, yes. Run npx clonekit-cli export with the kit's id, then copy the folder to ~/.claude/skills/ or your agent's skills folder.
